Sun Unleashes Major Solar Flare at Earth (Video)

This close-up of the sun shows the source of a major X1.6 solar flare that erupted on Sept. 10, 2014 at 1:48 p.m. ET as seen by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. (NASA/SDO)

Update for Sept. 11: The Slooh Community Observatory will feature live views of the flare-spouting sunpost AR2158 today at 1 p.m. ET. To watch it, visit: LIVE TODAY @ 1 pm: Slooh Webcast on Solar Flare Hotspot.

A big storm erupted on the sun today (Sept. 10), and Earth was in the crosshairs.

The sun unleashed an X-class solar flare — the most powerful type — at 1:45 p.m. EDT (1745 GMT) today from an Earth-facing sunspot known as Active Region 2158, which also fired off another intense solar flare yesterday. Both space weather events were captured on camera by NASA's sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft.

You saw what happened last time, parts of Canada was out for a minute. These flare isn't a joke, and one day they can send us back to the dark ages. And it's not like we can flick a switch and be back up and running, we would have to turn into hunter gathers again.

Peace!

LoL, point well taken bro. Enki @hunter-gathers again.

Question: Does entropy have anything to do with these sudden changes in the stratosphere?

Yes, and somewhat no.

Entropy is just like senescence, they both are a product of time. And over time, everything changes and ends because entropy is a pervasive force. That the yes.

The somewhat no is that you have certain elements that are expediting the changes you see in the stratosphere. One being pollution, and the other is CFC's. Now the ozone layer is a part of the stratosphere, and it's getting weaker by the day due to the things I pointed out. So when the sun's rays constantly pass through this layer, it only makes it worst, and sooner or later, it will dissolve.

Peace!
