I have personally been to Cuba, and not in some walled off tourist section, but illegally stayed with a family to get a feel for the real Cuba. It's messed up. Nobody wants to live like that. But we can't condemn the model that Fidel tried to put in place, because it was never given a chance. The embargo and other things empoverished the island. Actually, before the embargo the economy was taking off, but who knows. i think corruption is hard to defeat, and a socialism of the Cuban type must be clean or it won't work. But you gotta marvel at the experiment and what was accomplished against all odds. A world view that is not based on consumerism is a beautiful thing. I met old folks who said even though things were tough, no one was dying of hunger like before. so that means something. I met people who had little to nothing in consumer goods but were truly happy. They had different measurements. so that was weird. many cubans think they would like under U.S. domination, cuz they watch t.v., but they would be in for a rude awakening. Cubans are not fawning over all things american. that's crap. as a matter of fact, most of the people would ask me about things they heard about americans which they found to be insane. for instance, many asked me, "is it true that you guys put your grandparents in old people homes?"
"is it true that your children go to far away places to attend college?"
"is it true that you have homeless people?"
"is it true that if you don't have money, you can't go to the doctor?"
"is it true that the police will make you turn down your music?"
