How about we keep this really simple. Here's a man who despite being in the USA military had simply reached a point where as he wasn't going to be sent over there to "kill his own people"? I mean, wouldn't that be like an Ethiopian brother here in the military being deployed to Ethiopia to kill so call Ethiopian insurgents? He could have contested the deployment order, through his commander. No word if this was tried or not. Would have been better than shooting up the deployment center. And your Ethiopian brother could do the same. We had Armenian linguists contesting being sent to Turkey, and during Viet Nam being sent from there to Alaska, this was for humanitarian reasons as it could involve extreme temperature changes, like 180 degrees.
Also hard to believe that this was the first time a Major(rank does not happen over night) had never been deployed outside the USA. ie spent his whole time at Walter Reed.
