According to the Concise Etymological Dictionary, it was originally "tip for tap", i.e. "blow for blow", dating in English back to the 1500s.

Its meaning and sound gradually drifted to mean any sort of retribution. One linguist speculates that the backward movement of the consonants (from the labial "p" to the dental "t") may contribute to the softening of the meaning, but that's purely guesswork.

What is your purpose for posting this link to the thread, which I did read, then posting the above response with a reference to the 1500's?

My initial response to your post is MY OPINION.

I personally think (not that it means much of anything to you or others) that you need to learn how to let others speak their mind without trying to moderate and let others voices stand as is.

So, since you felt that compulsion, straight to the point, perhaps it was an act of retaliation by the atheists which is perfectly within their constitutional rights so long as they don't infringe on the rights of others.
