"If Obama gives money to struggling Americans, Republican­s say he does it only for PR-reasons­. If he'd refuse to give money to charity they'd say he is heartless. If Obama does right they never recognize it, if Obama does wrong they never forget".

Whether it's for PR not it seemed to have worked for him, you can't really get bad publicity by giving out your own money.
