Lincoln on the Dred Scott Case
By Andre Austin
Last night I heard a Republican presidential candidate pump up Lincoln saying he was against the Dred Scott case and would have tried to overthrow it. He equated this with the abortion, and gay rights being overthrown.
I look at the full context of Lincoln in order to understand his stand on Equality as it concerns blacks. Take a look at the bleak vision of Lincoln who supported:
1. Colonization
2. Deportation
3. Segregation
4. Graduation of Emancipation
5. No Amalgamation of the races
6. Compensation of masters owning property of slaves
Now that we established a foundation lets explore why Lincoln believed that the declaration of Independence included blacks as “All men are created Equal”. Go read Lincoln’s speech to the black colonization Committee and his debates with Stephen Douglass . Then you will discover that Blacks were not the equal with whites to serve on a jury or to marry a white woman. He was only equal with a white on an animal level to hunt and gather food for his own subsistence with pay. Lincoln viewed us as different from whites on religious grounds too and felt whites couldn’t get along until we got out of their hairs.
