(Paris High School Principal Gary Preston and PISD Police Officer Joey McCarthy)
Paris Independent School District followed a new public school trend by hiring its own police force in October of 2013. The District insisted that this move was about safety and would have nothing to do with discipline.
On February 24, 2014 Paris High School senior Joquan Wallace asked his last period teacher if he could use the restroom. He was given permission. What happened next borders on bizarre.
According to Joquan, he used the restroom farthest away from his classroom. He said the restroom he used was the least used. Joquan stated that he heard someone come into the restroom and leave out. He said that when he left the restroom, PISD Police Officer Joey McCarthy was standing outside the door waiting on him.
(Paris High Student Joquan Wallace)Joquan gave The Paris Texas Chronicle the following statement:
http://theparistexaschroniclehome.blogspot.com/2014/03/is-using-restroom-crime-at-paris-high.html
The school jock and good student who has never been in trouble said that the paid cop asked him why he was using the bathroom ( ), and followed him back to his classroom when he told him he said he wanted to do #2. Later, paid cop brought the principal back to the classroom who called Joquan out. He went into the hall and was manhandled, handcuffed and arrested. He won't be able to graduate with his class in June and he faces felony charges.
There are bruises on Joquan, a "small" fellow, but none on the big, burly cop or principal who deny they attacked him. Students who saw the altercation say Joquan neither struck the cop nor cursed at the principal (as he alleges) and told of him being put in a headlock, slammed against a wall, thrown half-way over a bannister and handcuffed.
Now I know Paris, TX has a baaaaad history with messing with its black citizens, but man! It's like one of the kids said - from the schoolroom to the jailhouse?
