She became a Feminist meme for young women, and as such became distasteful to the older white people who watch the show. I've read many posts on websites talking about her "smiles don't win gold medals" statement and many older white people got the idea that she felt she was entitled to winning the competition, souring them on her. Even in this day an age, they still think even our most accomplished must kowtow to their feelings of superiority.
