Floods kill 66 in Afghanistan

Flash floods triggered by heavy rains have killed at least 66 people and rendered thousands homeless in Afghanistan, officials say.

The head of Afghan National Disaster Management Authority said Saturday that hundreds of homes had been destroyed in northern and western parts of the country following days of heavy rains.

"Twenty-three people have died in Badghis, 21 in Ghor and another 22 in Herat province," AFP quoted Abdul Hameed Mubariz Hameedi, referring to the three worst-hit provinces.

Flood-waters have also damaged farm lands in the region. Rescue workers are struggling to help thousands of affected people.

Deadly tornado and storms hit south-western China

Severe storms and a tornado have killed at least 39 people near the city of Chongqing in south-western China.

State news agency Xinhua reported that at least 150 others were injured after heavy rain, a hail storm, gales and a tornado struck two rural districts.

Rescue work was underway in Liangping and Dianjiang districts, Xinhua said, and some 70,000 people were temporarily evacuated from areas near Chongqing.

The storms destroyed some 1,000 homes, damaged crops, and caused power cuts.

Local reports said almost 1,000 homes in Chongqing - a municipality of more than 30 million people - had partially collapsed and thousands more were damaged.

Our correspondent says tornadoes which kill are relatively rare in China.

Magnitude 6.4 quake hits southern Peru

(AP) – 3 days ago

LIMA, Peru — The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.4 earthquake has shaken southern Peru.

The USGS says the quake's epicenter was 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of Tacna, Peru, at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles). The quake struck at 9:43 p.m. local time and was near the border with Chile, which on Feb. 27 was hammered by a huge magnitude-8.8 quake and tsunami.

Quake hits Indonesia, sparks Tsunami alert

A POWERFUL quake with a magnitude of at least 7.2 has hit the Indonesian province of Aceh in an area devastated by the killer waves of the 2004 tsunami.

The quake struck at 12:59 pm (1559 AEST) 66 kilometres (41 miles) southwest of Meulaboh on the Aceh coast, according to the local Meteorological and Geophysics Agency, triggering a local tsunami alert.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 7.4.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage although some media said panicked people rushed from their houses and some sought higher ground.

In neighbouring Malaysia, the Meteorological Department said there was no threat of a tsunami in the country which lies to the north of Sumatra.

However, it said tremors were felt in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia including in the northern resort island of Penang.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Sumatra in early April, leaving about 17 people injured when some houses collapsed.

A 7.6-magnitude quake killed about 1000 people in the port of Padang, western Sumatra, in September last year.

Iran says plans new war games, photographed U.S. ship

THE HONORABLE ELIJAH MUHAMMAD:

I BELIEVE and maybe many hundreds of thousands believe as I do, that the President of the United States of America had good intentions toward the citizens of America, when he took over the presidency, but the time is against it.

Ahmadinejad: "We believe that there is a group that is trying to bring Mr. Obama closer to clash with Iran or stand against Iran."

[Q] Your visit here in New York, to the United Nations, to address the international body does coincides with a US push for the fourth round of sanctions against your country. It looks as though for recent statements that the US may be victorious. How do you think it’s going to play out?

[A] Well, I explained the main reason why I was here. My presence here is to follow a larger goal, the humane goal, the one that is global. We are not concerned by sanctions. Of course, we don't welcome them, but we are not concerned by them either. We believe they are oppressive and unjust. But just the fact that you mention that the United States is putting a lot of pressure means that what they have chosen to do is illegal, unlawful, and unfair. If in fact it is in line with international law, there is no need to put pressure to bring so much pressure on it to happen. The fact that there is pressure means that decisions that are made regarding sanctions are not democratic ones. Decisions are of value only when they are made freely. When it is done under pressure by a power, it is naturally undemocratic. And when it is undemocratic, it cannot be accepted so easily. And several consequences occur. The credibility of such decisions gets lost. The credibility of international organizations is reduced. We believe that there is a group that is trying to bring Mr. Obama closer to clash with Iran or stand against Iran. When Mr. Obama is placed in the position of clashing with Iran, then his motto for change is lost. Mr. Bush used to pass resolutions against us. Where did it go? Where did it take him? Where are we today and where is he today? Iran is still advancing, and he is gone.
