Black People : Duke Rape Accuse Crystal Mangum May Face Murder Charge

Crystal Mangum is not a "young girl" but a grown woman, 34 years old, mother of 3 children. However, she does have a history of mental illness and a past police record on driving while intoxicated, stealing a vehicle, resisting arrest and other charges.

Her mental illness may stem from an alleged previous sexual assault she said she suffered as a teenager.--- She dropped the case citing that she feared for her life.

In 2006, when she made the false rape charges against the Duke students, she was 28 years old working as a stripper, not a "young girl." ---- Strippers go where ever the money is. The company she worked for had a request from the Duke students for their party; and she and some other young women were sent there. (Now, I've heard that the Duke students did request some WHITE strippers; but for whatever reasons, they got some Black ones.)

Before these recent murder charges, in 2010, she was arrested for threatening to STAB her previous boyfriend, setting his clothes on fire in the tub, and endangering her children who were present in the apartment (one of her children called 911).

Her present criminal case comes from 2011 when she stabbed her then boyfriend, Reginald Daye. He later died, and she was charged with his murder.

So, this young woman has a history of mental illness and violent behavior.

In my opinion, her family failed her when she was "young girl" by not adequately addressing her mental illness.

Currently, the father of 2 of her children has custody of them..... I don't know who has the other child.

Overall, there is much more to this young woman's background than meets the eye; but I do agree that this is, indeed, a sad situation for all of the lives touched by Crystal Mangum.

"In my opinion, her family failed her when she was "young girl" by not adequately addressing her mental illness."

Yes, this is the issue that strikes me and not just her family, but the community as a whole, I believe plays a role in situations like this as well. I am aware that she is 'a grown woman now', and I'm sure that your thouroughness in specifying that she was 'a grown woman' when she was cited for her crimes and as a stripper in the case of the Duke issue is also well taken into account by this system as well. I'm sure they won't miss that point either.

I think it is interesting too, that you heard that the Duke students requested White strippers, and if this is true then, it makes me believe Crystal's story even more.

Perhaps I misunderstood when you previously asked...

Where is her father? Why would this young Black girl put herself in such a situation of being a stripper, and then going to be at a party of a group of White men, college men, in the first place?...
Her father may not have liked nor condoned her being a stripper; but there's really nothing he could do being since she was a grown woman, 28 years old at the time.

Like selling drugs, being a stripper is fast money for young women.

Crystal and the other stripper were sent to this party of young white men because the company they worked for sent them there. They were there as employees to do a job: dance and strip.---- and get paid.

According to her "co-worker," Crystal showed up for "work" at this party already drunk and belligerent; and she and the other stripper had an altercation when they got there.

With Crystal's history of mental illness, she was also probably on some medications which should not be mixed with alcohol.

Now that's true!

Just because parents raise their children doesn't necessarily mean that they will do the right thing. This is my constant focus on a personal note. I hope my children don't do anything to that degree. it is tough being a parent.

Crystal Mangum wants attorney after all
Published: March 21, 2013

DURHAM — Murder suspect Crystal Mangum has changed her mind about representing herself and asked for a third court-appointed attorney.
In a Thursday hearing before Chief Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson, Mangum said attorney Scott Holmes has agreed to take her case if he is appointed by the courts’ Indigent Defense Services.
Hudson agreed to allow Mangum to ask for an attorney, but IDS will make its own decision on whom to appoint.
“I can’t make IDS go against their rules,” Hudson said.
Mangum said that if Holmes is not appointed, she would prefer to continue as her own lawyer. Prosecutors have said Woody Vann, whom Mangum dismissed last year over “trust issues,” should be reappointed since he is already familiar with the case. Vann had been appointed after Mangum’s first attorney, Chris Shella, resigned from the case.
Mangum faces charges of first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon and larceny in the death of Reginald Daye, 46, who died at Duke Hospital 10 days after Mangum stabbed him in April 2011. Her trial is scheduled for July 8.

....

But minister Fharrakhan's words sure do rang. Out of all of what he said here, there were some words that really struck my heart:

he said,

"...For instance the young lady in north Carolina our dear sister who is a woman that wants to get ahead in Americas she’s in school trying to get an education to feed her children, but I heard that she’s apart of an escort service and here she has to go into an all white lacross team and shake herself to entice men that have always disrespected the black woman...."

I've since heard an update from cherryblossom here that this young woman is now stuck in prison and she is being tried for murder and she has been completely abandoned. She is representing her ownself and that means, she has been completely abandoned and will be totally mocked by White people in the court process while there will be Black people in the system looking onward at her miserble lot. And this is going on in my very city, and I am deeply struck. I'm hurt inside because I know that this is laughter, not only at her, but at the Black woman.

She has a father, where the Hell is her father, and why did he stand by and let her become a call girl like that without appealing to his own child. I'm so angry. NO, I'm told that those la cross men requested for White women, but that black girl got sent, and those rich White men are older now, and they are still going to try and maintain thier image and this Black girl has been thrown to a system of hate.

I don't understand why Black women can't see this trap either though.....

1. She is not in prison. She was held in jail but she has been out on bond since February. Her trial is set for July.

2. At first, she wanted to represent herself but has recently agreed to a court-appointed lawyer.

3. I don't understand why you keep mentioning the presence of her father.

What is any parent to do about the decisions and life paths of an adult child? Whether it's a grown daughter who works as a stripper or a grown son who sells drugs or steals for a living, what can any father actually do to make them change their choices?

....other than talking to them, counseling them and praying for them, what can any parent DO to change the behavior of their grown children?

Crystal was 28 years old working as a stripper.

Just what could her father have done to prevent her choosing that job or to get her to stop?

He could "appeal" to her as much as possible; but with an adult child, no parent has any power to actually make them stop doing something.

4. Now, I'm not entirely sure that the Duke Lacrosse team requested white women; but even if they did, that is understandable. --- However, Crystal wasn't stripping by herself at that party. There was another Black girl there also. ---- which makes me wonder what, if any, problems the other young woman experienced at that party....why only Crystal? -----And, again, Crystal was very drunk at that party. She has a history of problems with alcohol....especially so when mixed with the medicines for her mental illnesses.

5. WHO has "abandoned" her? --- Has her family abandoned her in her recent criminal troubles? I have seen no reports on this.

As for legal representation, SHE CHOSE to represent herself but has since opted for a public lawyer.

6. Because this is set in your own city, I would think there would be more local news and updates on Crystal and her legal issues.
