American society has received A LOT of cool stuff from the military and military development with regard to technology and other areas.

The Internet didn't become big until the 1980s/90s.

Computers were first used by the military and college communities.

A good rule of thumb is to presume that the US military is 20 to 30 years ahead with regard to technology, in my opinion.
