CMPD says it has video of suspect choking herself

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- CMPD announced Thursday it has video evidence showing how a teenage shoplifting suspect nearly killed herself in the back seat of a police cruiser.

On Dec. 5, police said 18-year-old Tanisha Williams choked herself with a seat belt in the back of a police car after being arrested at the CitiTrends store on Freedom Drive. She was in police custody and was wearing handcuffs.

During a news conference Thursday night, Tanisha Williams' family said she was brain dead.

"I can't even ask her, 'Sis, what was going on? What happened to you?' Ain't nobody can answer my questions. Nobody but God," said Tanisha Williams older sister, Porsha Williams.

The family held the news conference with their attorney because, they said, CMPD hasn't answered their questions for the last three weeks.

"I'm hurting by what happened to her, and it wasn't handled right from the beginning," said Tanisha Williams' grandmother, Darlene Talley.

Police told Eyewitness News the internal investigation is "nearly complete." Both officers involved in the arrest are on full, active duty.

Police confirmed they have video showing what happened. Tanisha Williams' family said they didn't learn that until shortly before the news conference.

"When this first happened, why didn't they tell me they had a film? Why didn't they tell me then?" asked Talley.

Porsha Williams said she needs to see the tape to heal.

"No matter how nasty, how brutal this tape is, by me being her sister, I want to see it," Porsha Williams said.

That would be a very interesting video, indeed, to show how someone can choke him/herself to death with a seat-belt, wearing hand-cuffs.

No disrespect to the deceased; but, unless she was hand-cuffed in the front (which the police never do), she woulda had to been like "Houdini" to choke herself to death with her hands hand-cuffed behind her.

My prayers to her family and that God's Will be done to give them justice.

Of course, by now, that video has been "edited" and "doctored up" by the police; but it's still hard to show how she could do that.----Unless she wrapped and twisted her head in the seat-belt, I just don't see how....And even IF she did so, what were the cops in the front seat doing while she was hanging herself?? ....or was she in the car by herself and did this before the cops got back in the squad car?

Lotsa unanswered questions...I'll look forward to hearing her family's reaction/reception of the video after they view it.

"Private screenings" suggest that the young lady really did attempt suicide:

On Tuesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police invited the media to view a tape made from inside the police car. The tape began with police focusing the camera on the backseat and on Williams.
WBTV's Steve Crump. who viewed the tape, said that it clearly showed the teen banging her head against a Plexiglas window until the window broke. It also showed her wrapping her head in a seatbelt.
The police officer left Williams alone in the car while he went to retrieve something to restrain her with.

There can be any number of explanations: Maybe she was drugged, maybe the video was doctored, maybe she genuinely feared imprisonment, maybe she refused to live, and so forth.

However, there is one reality: Africans are a kidnapped population who should not be policed by Europeans.

This young girl is a victim of a kidnapping, as are we. We need to look at the broader picture to make these blemishes vanish.
