Black Women : Mammy, Jezebel, Sapphire, or Queen? Stereotypes of the African-American Female

I've stated being called a N, a Black B, and bring nearly ran over. Why use my mind thinking about sterotypes when I got white folk picking fights.
What am I calling entertainment?
Tyler Perry makes movies. To watch or not to watch is the question.
Are you not tired of talking bout old sterotypes?
I don't even think about them anymore.

You said Tyler Perry movies were just entertainment. I choose to not watch Madea, because of the perpetuation of stereotypes.

Jezebel wouldn't fit Lil Kim or Foxy Brown, as Chris "Biggie" Wallace was involved with Kim before he became the Notorious B.I.G.

Foxy Brown didn't really have a significant other.

That Kardashian was a known harlot, that soon wooed Kanya West seemingly for the purposes of fame. Kayne hasn't been the same since.

The woman that called herself "super head" would probably be another one, but she didn't really do what "Jezebel" did... if on reads the story of "Jezebel". This again is a false narrative imposed to make someone think that "Jezebel" was a whore sexually.

"Jezebel" was a scheming woman that did what she did for sake of power and possibly the love of her man/King, regardless of if it was wicked or not.

I am not sure who fits this category, but Lil Kim and Foxy Brown would only be considered under the "slave master" terms of "Jezebel", and not in the contextual form of the character.

Jezebel as it relates to the "black female stereotype" was something invented by "Pseudo Christian Slavers" in order to impress upon the women that they used as concubines, as such and nothing more... "you are whores, sex slaves", simply put.

They would create a system where the women would be valued based on their "sexual" abilities that were taught to them by their "Pseudo Christian Slavers". By the way, my "ancestors" are providing this information.

So when we perpetuate the mythos and stereotype that was created, what are we doing?
Oral pleasure was a symbol of submission by the concubine, now it seems as if it's a badge of honor for some. This is called conditioning, which I desire no part of.

  • Yet some enjoy Empire like it's sweet tea. Cookie would be considered a "Jezebel" maybe

NOW...

How does one overcome the stereotyping?

By provided examples of how the stereotyping is a way to regurgitation misnomers and false ideals of collective groups of persons.

So if one is suggesting that this thread is about regurgitating the stereotypes, then I may have posted that in error.

Thought this was to dispel and counter these stereotypes.
Regardless, the 20+ types were shared... we can ignore them, or just focus on the few that "are as American as apple pie".

My ideas are not necessarily "American" ideas, nor are they "White-American" ideas, though I am what is considered an "American"... so context is needed when it comes to "American" and "apple pie".

Oh, and I like apple pie as well...

APPLE PIE ISN’T REALLY “AMERICAN”

Appreciating what you've said, if I understand you correctly, you are referring to a biblical definition of Jezebel, and that is logical, while I am relying on the definition attributed by the author of the OP which is:

The “Jezebel” stereotype, also referred to as a sexual siren, is characterized as African American women who are overly sexualized, aggressive, sexually promiscuous, uncaring, completely lacking in virtue and a woman who will use her sexuality to manipulate and deceive. This image also portrays the African American woman as a “*****” or “whore”. White males fostered this image of African American women during slavery to excuse their sexual abuse and rape of these women. This stereotype was also created to rationalize the sexual exploitation of these women in ways that made them responsible for their own victimization. They used the excuse that because these women were such sexual animals, they couldn’t help but get carried away. At that time, African American women were characterized as something other than human, so the assault didn’t matter.
As far as overcoming the stereotypes... I think the first step is acknowledgement. Some are unaware of them to a certain extent. I think they mainly appear in mass media, TV and film. So, being aware of them, refusing to collaborate in ventures that perpetuate them, and not supporting those ventures as a consumer are the second step we should take, imo. Thirdly, making use of, and building on, alternative images as you've suggested, is the ultimate key. And, I thank you for moving the thread from a problem state, toward a solution.

Are you speaking of what was or how things use to be?
Are you currently noticing these sterotypes in your life?
I'm not. I've overcome negative sterotypes assigned to us by slave owners. I will not give them that power in my head, my mind, my life.

You seem defensive of those sterotypes. As something you are holding on to.

We have enough to do than fuss over Jezabel. Mammy and Sapphire.

We still got the "N" word to defend among other white folk stuff.
I have overcome Jez and them.

I absolutely love this post. I even took notes:

we have an uphill battle to break out of the mold, the pigeon holes they made for us.
***I broke out of that mold so long ago

By the-way, my"ancestors" are providing this information. LOL

Last and best of all:

By provided examples of how the stereotyping is a way to regurgitation misnomers and false ideals of collective groups of persons.
