You are right. There is a difference. To say I am vi is to make the vi a definitive aspect of who I am. To say I have a vi just means that''s something I have but is separate from who I am. Finally, I would ask you to consider to this:
"I AM visually impaired"...
vs.
"I HAVE a visual impairment"....
are these two statements different...and if so...how?...
