LAGOS - Widening the growing global Anglican rift over homosexuality, bishops in Africa said yesterday they would stop theological training of African clergy in Western institutions.

Bishops also were studying creation of a separate African theology, rejecting gay clergy and same-sex marriages, they said. The African Anglican leaders, ending a six-day meeting, stopped short of calling for an outright split in the Anglican Church as some had feared they would.

Africa’s Anglican leaders expressed fury at the consecration of a gay bishop in New Hampshire, renewing their intention to break from the American church. “The Devil has clearly entered our church,” said Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi of Kenya, who announced that his church will have nothing to do with the Episcopal Church in the U.S., which sanctioned the election of an openly gay Bishop V. Eugene Robinson. “We totally reject and denounce this obnoxious attitude and behavior,” the church said in a statement last month. “It is devilish and satanic. It comes directly from the pit of hell. It is an idea sponsored by Satan himself…”

Most Africans agree with the Archbishop of Kenya, especially Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. When a homosexual rights group tried to set up a stand at the Harare Book Fair in 1995, Mugabe evicted them as "sodomists and sexual perverts." A group of 70 U.S. Congressmen sent him a letter of condemnation, to which he gave reply:

"Let the Americans keep their sodomy, bestiality, stupid and foolish ways to themselves, out of Zimbabwe..."
(Electronic Telegraph, 8/25/'95)

Mugabe also reportedly told journalists:

"We do not believe homosexuals have any rights at all. They can demonstrate, but if they come here, we will throw them in jail."
