The article is pretty understated. The most generous polls of African Americans and religion places the community at roughly upwards of 85%. There's also research that shows Americans consider religion to be a proxy for judging a person's moral compass and it stands in the way of progress on a lot of issues. The humanist gathering at least showed that the myth of there being no black non-theist is false and the visibility couldn't hurt the case of secular Americans of any stripe.
