Brazil’s Ministry of Health and Foundation Announce Alliance to Advance Innovation in Global Health | Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

First initiative of the alliance is the launch of Grand Challenges Brazil, a program to accelerate research to improve the health of women and children

BRASÍLIA, Brazil – The Brazilian Ministry of Health today announced a strategic alliance with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to prioritize the development of solutions for pressing global health issues. This Alliance will dedicate resources to explore new ways of tackling challenges associated with vaccines, nutrition, maternal and child health, and infectious disease control.

The flagship initiative under the alliance is the launch later this year of Grand Challenges Brazil – a program aimed at catalyzing innovative health research. Initially focused on maternal and child health, the Ministry of Health, National Council on Research and the Gates Foundation will allocate up to USD $8 Million (R $14.7 Million) for research to prevent and manage pre-term birth.

    Philanthropy

    Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Gates studied the work of Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, and in 1994, sold some of his Microsoft stock to create the "William H. Gates Foundation." In 2000, Gates and his wife combined three family foundations to create the charitable Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was identified by the Funds for NGOs company in 2013, as the world's wealthiest charitable foundation, with assets reportedly valued at more than $34.6 billion.[91][92] The Foundation allows benefactors to access information that shows how its money is being spent, unlike other major charitable organizations such as the Wellcome Trust.[93][94]

The foundation is organized into four program areas: Global Development Division, Global Health Division, United States Division, and Global Policy & Advocacy Division.[95]

Gates has credited the generosity and extensive philanthropy of David Rockefeller as a major influence. Gates and his father met with Rockefeller several times, and their charity work is partly modeled on the Rockefeller family's philanthropic focus, whereby they are interested in tackling the global problems that are ignored by governments and other organizations.[96] As of 2007, Bill and Melinda Gates were the second-most generous philanthropists in America, having given over $28 billion to charity;[97] the couple plan to eventually donate 95 percent of their wealth to charity.[98]

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supports the use of genetically modified organisms in agricultural development.

Are Gates and Rockefeller using their influence to set agenda in developing countries?
    January 15, 2016

“Through their multiple channels of influence, the Rockefeller and Gates foundations have been very successful in promoting their market-based and bio-medical approaches towards global health challenges in the research and health policy community – and beyond.”

Their strategy includes placing people in international organisations, and gaining privileged access to scientific, business and political elites.

For example, when Bill Gates visited Berlin to campaign for the Gavi Alliance (the vaccine alliance of governments, NGOs and companies set up with Gates and Rockefeller money), he met the German chancellor and the foreign, finance, development and health ministers.

    Cheryl,

Below as we discussed is Ariel's bio. All of this paperwork is in and I hope he is announced during the lame duck session as we need him urgently.

I also would highlight that we have a very strong new team in Global Health. This includes:

Arnie Batson — she was the World Bank's star in Global health, created the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization and was the force behind most of the World Bank's innovative health initiatives including polio eradication buy downs, health systems work with the UK and Norway and Gates, and the bank's focus on AIDS and malaria.

We also have hired some other very strong players including Heather Flynn (came from the Hill and does leg for GH), Seth Amgot (came from the advocacy community and does communications and did that work with ONE and Gates and Rockefeller and others previously), Wendy Taylor (ran bioventures fro global health which was a significant gates grantee and did the major product development partnerships in the field) a couple of folks from McKinsey that worked on projects and I have seen their work before and some junior people like Betsy Williams that are very good.
