Jamaican track gold medalist Kemar Bailey-Cole says he has the Zika virus

Kemar Bailey-Cole, who ran alongside Usain Bolt on Jamaica’s gold medal-winning 4×100-meter relay team at the 2012 London Olympics, has revealed that he is suffering from the Zika virus. Bailey-Cole was in the running for a spot on Jamaica’s sprint-relay team at this year’s Rio Games, but now that’s in doubt ...

    Interesting.

My son has a friend that just recently came back from Brazil and she said she was tested and does not have the virus. But she was a little sick. I'm wondering now, more about this virus. I mean, will it go away after awhile, like having a cold, or what? I've been reading, but I have more questions than answers. Thanks for posting.

The Race to Cure the Zika Virus is On, and This Company May Have the Best Solution

When it comes to eradicating the Zika virus, this company is thinking well outside the box

Last week, The White House suggested a plan to funnel $589 million in funds previously earmarked to treat Ebola to the Zika virus instead, the idea being to have the funds necessary should a Zika outbreak occur. However, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has stated that his agency needs $1.9 billion in funding to adequately fight back if infections surge within the United States ...

Zika outbreak: What you need to know

The World Health Organization has declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency.

The infection is suspected of leading to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains.

Some areas have declared a state of emergency, doctors have described it as "a pandemic in progress" and some are even advising women in affected countries to delay getting pregnant.

But there is much we do not know in this emerging infection ...

I haven't checked all the links in this thread but I was told that the virus can be sexually transmitted. Has anyone else heard that too?

World's largest mosquito factory hopes to prevent Zika

The Sun Yat-Sen University-Michigan University Joint Center of Vector Control for Tropical Disease is conducting field trials to prevent the Zika virus near Guangzhou, China. Considered the world’s largest mosquito factory, the laboratory raises millions of male mosquitoes for research that could prove key to the race to prevent the spread of Zika. The lab’s mosquitoes are infected with a strain of Wolbachia pipientis, a common bacterium shown to inhibit Zika and related viruses, including dengue fever. Researchers release the infected mosquitoes at nearby Shazai island to mate with wild females, who then inherit the Wolbachia bacterium, which prevents the proper fertilization of eggs ...

First U.S.-based Zika infections confirmed in Florida

... Five new cases of Zika have been found in tourist hotspot Miami Beach, signaling that local transmission of a virus blamed for birth defects is spreading, Florida officials said Friday.

“This means we have a new area” of local transmission, Governor Rick Scott said at a press conference.

The Florida Health Department said five individuals had been confirmed as cases of local Zika transmission in the Miami Beach area ...

Pregnant women and women who could become pregnant should be no where close to that area because of the harm the virus can do to the fetus. Why is every virus now becoming sexually transmitted?

The less known information that isn't being as widely shared about the affects of the virus but just as disturbing is, experts are also investigating whether Zika can trigger Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder which can lead to muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. I've seen what GBS can do and it's pretty scary.

Thanks for the contribution on GBS and the excellent question on the nexus of viruses and sexual transmissions. The broad answer is connected to this famous statement: "America is the fall before Rome." As sexual conduct took down Rome, so shall it be for America.
