Zambian Government Rejects Genetically Modified Crops

The Zambian government has rejected a call made this week by a group of scientific, agricultural and nongovernmental organisations to use genetically-modified (GM) crops to reduce poverty and hunger.

The group -- consisting of AfricaBio, the Africa Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum, Africa Harvest Biotech Foundation International, Biotechnology-Ecology Research and Outreach Consortium (BioEROC) and the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Application (ISAAA) -- released a joint press statement endorsing the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which was published in the Times of Zambia on 30 July.

Responding to the statement, Zambian minister of agriculture and cooperatives, Ben Kapita, told SciDev.Net, "We have always said that Zambia will not be used as a dumping place for GMO products."

But others believe that not researching GM technology at this stage could undermine the future of biotechnology in Africa.

From what I understand about genetically manipulated crops - they are being rejected all over the EU by the local farmers as they destroy the natural environment causing large imbalances in their ecosystems ie UK, NL and France have been battling against the GM sugar beet for years now - trying to get rid of what they once thought was a "great idea".

GM crops are very expensive to instigate (putting local farmers in major debt from the start) and although the returns may be good, the long term effects are devestating. Both environmentally, and financially - as being in debt means losing control over your own goods, and reproducing the crop by unnatural means takes its toll - as not all GM crops natually reproduce.

They develop immunities, repel their natural parasites - kill the bug and you kill a whole string of species...

If one wants to support Africa and its quest to feed its populace, it can be done without the genetically manipulated crops which in essence, fill the $ pockets of the West, without long term sustainability in Africa.

its a debate - so this is just my $0.02 worth. I'm glad Zambia rejected the offer.
