"Young people are out of control these days"...."We were never like THAT (young people) back in our day"...

I've also heard people say they feel bad for the generation of young people. What is there to feel bad about?

When you were younger, did the older folks say the same thing about you?

Also, I have to say...I resent those who put my views down just because I am younger.

    MsInterpret,

Great topic! Keep this in mind though, social issues are cyclical, and everything goes around and comes around, the young become old, etc...

James Baldwin was interviewed a very young Nikki Giovanni back in 1973.
and as they were talking.. he put it this way, a great deal of things
that appear new to you, are not new to me.
And he didn't say that in
a way that minimized her observations, he said it in a way that illustrated
the fact that he had been fighting this same fight since before she was
concious of it.. And she accepted that.. and their conversation went on..
what happens alot with young folks is they don't want to listen to the
perspectives of their elders.. and that has to do with the way Divide and
conquer is applied between the young and the old... The whole goal is
to separate the young from the wisdom of their elders so that they can
fall into the same traps.. buy into the same ideas that tripped up the
previous generation.. that way, every generation can start the fight
over.. from the beginning.. Young folks have to be willing to listen.. and old
folks have to have something worth listening to.. it's a two way charge..
It's really disappointing to look to someone for guidance and get nothing
but bitterness or defeated rhetoric.. or outdated.. un-updated strategies..
it's complicated.. but if you look at TV and Film.. they spend an awful
lot of time framing the older generation as out of touch... or old world..
and it's really crazy when you think about it.. I'm 38 and 16 year old
are surprised that I listen to hip hop.. And I'm surprised at how
little they know about the world.. we really have to find a way to get
together.. because it's all part of the plan for our destruction as a people.

If you could name some of the things you see large numbers of young folks engaged in that upset you or tick you off then a resposne could be made if whether or not the same behaviors were made in the past,
so that us old timers can reply repectfully
without being prejudicial or preachy but fair to todays younger generation .

    Thanks skuderjaymes...

As far as tv, film or the media in general. Not all of us younger people feel this way about older folks. Most of us enjoy listening to our elders and we do appreciate what they have to say. But when it's time for us to say something...it's "What do you know, you're young." That's what's frustrating...

Well I don't like how I see kids dancing provocatively...And think it's cool grind on each other in a sexual manner...

I won't say I didn't do that when I was a teenager, but I will say I am ashamed and would never want to see my daughter "getting low" on the dance floor.

But Ankhur, this is more than just inappropriate behaviors, this may be a political view a younger person has, or an observation they may express to older person.

When is a person considered old enough to be viewed as "grown"?
