Black Spirituality Religion : You shall not TATTOO yourselves

Just an "f.y.i," Brother Hodee.....

Leviticus is in the Old Testament.

That verse is only found in Leviticus, not the New Testament. You referenced it the 2nd time from the "New International Bible," but that's not the New Testament.

Thank You Sister cherryblossom

I know a lot of the Old Testament spoke about things like slaves and masters and even this tattoo verse. A lot of how many Christian Whites treated African Americans was based on the old testament.

Please if known. Share with me your opinion. The verse is from the old, and was not translated into the New Testament.

Was the New Testament written so that many more would read the bible, the Old is hard to read and is full of things that appear negative like the reference to slaves and masters?

Was the New written and things not included to make the bible more popular?

I saw this court program and this lady was sueing her extranged husband because he had allowed their 16 year old son to get a tattoo of praying hands on his back.

I knew she was quoting from the old.

How popular is the Old still and do some churches still read from it?

Thanks Sister.. any information anyone can supply would be appreciated.

I am not one to judge, I know many who have tattoo's.
Folks do what they do and as they want.

I even know some folks here in California that cut themselves to blood let or they are playing vampire games.
Mostly women and they cut themselves sexually or something on the forearm or near the wrist.

Those Fraternity Black men who get branded and tatoo'ed for the Frat are getting cuttings and tatoo'ed.
Tatoo's have been done for centuries... as a world we haven't been doing well with this verse.

Another prevalent form of self-harm is branding or burning. Individuals burn their skin with a hot object such as an iron, the stove, and/or matches. Rubbing an eraser against the skin can also cause a friction burn. This form of self-harm is often seen in the adolescent population

When a cutter does not have a sharp object they may use a fingernail. Other forms of self-harm include picking at the skin, pulling hair, hitting and bruising oneself, and receiving multiple tattoos and/or piercings in an effort to inflict pain.

Should the Old be given credit or used when needed to bring up Christian Values
and to remind those who believe that they are not following God's will?

I posted this because I saw the law suit.

The lady won a few hundred because she was stressed about the tatoo and was a ardent Bible Reader and Christian.
She won Emotional Stress damages.

I am still trying to find out what cutting for the dead means?

Well, Brother Hodee, you've covered a pretty wide spectrum here; but I'm gonna try to address it to my understanding of Old Testament versus New Testament....

As for the Book of Leviticus, also known as "The Law" or "Mosaic Law," when those laws are extrapolated to the New Testament, they are still applicable but tempered by the coming of Jesus, His death and resurrection.

Matthew 5:
[17] Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

For example, the "Sacrificial Laws" were fulfilled by Jesus. No longer did Man need to make a sacrifice to God.----Jesus, "THE LAMB OF GOD" took away the sins of the world.'

No longer did Man need to "Atone" or "purify" by a set of rules. Jesus fulfilled that "Atonement" and "Purification."

Romans 3: [28] Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

However, we are ALL under the "law" of the COMMANDMENTS...

Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.

Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ***, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.

And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt not kill.

Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

Neither shalt thou steal.

Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ***, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

1 Corinthians 6:
[19] What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
[20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

So, as for tattoos, if one of the Commandments in the Old Testament speaks against "graven images" (engraved, pressed, sculptured) and the New Testament says that your body is not your own but is the TEMPLE of God within you, then, how do those two relate?

What else is a tattoo if not a "graven image?" Some people even get "religious" tattoos of scripture or angels.....But are not Angels of Heaven? Is not the Word of Heaven AND of the Earth?

When the New testament was published.

Did the Old Testiment become obsolete?

Many today live by the Old Testiment.

Many today practice, live and only read the New Testiment.

Here is a passage from the Old Testiment. It is also in the New!

OLD....testiment

NEW.... testiment

Many do not live by the ten ( 10 ) commandments within either?

This does raise concerns for me when THOU SHALL NOT KILL is ignored wholeheartly by so many.

Many people split both the Old and the New Testament, not understanding they both still and always will play a great part in the lives of the faithful. Though the laws of the Old Testament don't exactly apply the same as they did back when, they still do apply, and must be kept, including not getting tattoos.

We just must be believing and faithful to the One who died for our sins and who was resurrected from the dead, to have a full understanding of all the laws our our KING and Savior, and to be brought unto salvation.
