    you come running, jolaina
    by romus simpson

    you come running jolaina
    from the plantain fields
    before night darkens the river
& a curfew of stars drink in its water
in the patient ecstasy of evening palms
    their green tolling
small earth in the cool fire evening
    comet
    moon halo

    you tell me of cuba
skies tall as the aspirations of castro
& fields green as his army issue coat
i smile & lean into your eyes
& how your people came here
& marveled at the abundance of toilets
how your father sang & signed his letters home
    as “the american”

    at 35
your are a woman in michigan
    you chant that indian name
    michigan michigan
    & across town
    across the hemisphere
    rather, a few stores away
if you are seeking something special
    an ingredient to something rare
    your mother waits
    bread awaits
& three years rise in the continental interim
everywhere the roads turn broken & dangerous
    the untilled city
    the fallen plantains

    cuban summer
    its crystal hours
    so clear
clear as a chandelier of dayghosts
swimming in the shallow coral reefs
    every photograph hints to you
stretches its eye to see you
searches the small towns for your face
follows the rumor of your birth
i listen in the growing garden of your memory
brush the cane from my face
& let the sun bathe me white

how does anyone return to cuba, jolaina
    as tourists perhaps?
    with pockets of maps
    stopping children for pictures
    tinkering with pianos
or a strolling paternal diplomat touring the great avenue
    with his chest out
in personal breech of international sovereignty
longing to taste the young women
but trying not to breathe the air

    if you do not love
you will return as a body in the water
    stitched together with wire
    drifting in the late current
    a child may commandeer you
take your eye and save it
take your heart to a woman who is dying
follow the map on your soft belly

or you will return to cuba
    as shadow clandestine in night
or the dollar in a merchant’s pocket

yet if you learn to hold your mother
if you learn this great thing
    you may return as love
    a summer of love
    prodigal woman rising in june
rising as a free woman unfolds into the day
all silver with moondust & anthems
heralding the end of an errant season
    unafriad
    jehovah in your throat
raising your hand into the sun

    "I smile

    and lean into your eyes"

romusthepoet, you elevate the art of storytelling to a level I cannot adequately describe... I thoroughly enjoy sitting at your feet, as your words take me gently into captivity... I saw, felt, heard, and embodied "jolaina"!

    yes!
