Wrestling is a major component in West African martial art systems and a popular sport in Mali, Gambia and Senegal. When I went to Senegal about 5 years ago I saw a sport called "Borey" in which the wrestling techniques were more of a stand up style like greco-roman, no ground fighting, just bare-fist punches and throws. A friend of mine taught me some of the art and it is effective.

The Jola tribe(those brothers are big and strong as hell) in Senegal are known for the ground fighting, the Wolof are known for the boxing and strikes, the sedek?(spelling)tribe are known for the kicks.
