And those who disbelieve, their deeds are as a mirage in a desert, which the thirsty man deems to be water, until, when he comes to it, he finds it naught, and he finds Allah with him, so He pays him his due. And Allah is Swift at reckoning - [Al-Nur, part 18]

The thirsty man is the onlooker. The thirsty man may have been you or I at one time. The thirsty man is representative of many of our people.

The desert can be the hood. The desert can be any location or situation where life essentials (food, clothing and shelter)are scarce.

The desert can also be a state of mind, where we are desolate and devoid of thriving and vibrant thoughts which causes us to fantasize and see mirages. We become the thirsty man because our internal condition is as a desert.

Much wisdom can be extracted from the Quran, but for now...

Let me explain the above verse like this...

There are those of our people who are impressed by the lifestyles of those (various sports figures, entertainers, etc.) who the caucasian has bestowed riches upon. Many of our brothers and sisters think, 'man, so and so is ballin'. Many athletes and entertainers thought this themselves prior to their "blowing up", but when they came to it...like Biggie said, "the more money we come across, the more problems we see". Reality sinks in. Realization takes place and when there is no one else to turn to where do we turn? Allah says in the Quran that man cries out in sincere prayer when in affliction. Even though our brother who is lost to the knowledge of himself may not know that God dwells within his person, ironically, he becomes more introspective, as he calls on God. It is at that point that many of our people want to adjust their lives and pay God His due.
