How hot does the surface of the Moon get?

So if an astronaut is being sent into space but they know that he is not going to the Moon then why provide boots designed to withstand lunar surface temperatures? It is not like they could get to the Moon by accident and happen to need them.

Are those circular things magnets for sticking to spacecraft that would be useless on the Moon?
