His success in creating – and rallying – a broader Democratic base may not benefit the party’s next nominee.

Barack Obama's presidency is a tough act to follow for his former secretary of state.

Given the opportunity to elect the nation’s first black president, African American voters surged to the polls for President Barack Obama in numbers that would make most candidates drool: upwards of 90 percent of that bloc voted for him in both
2008 and 2012, increasing their share of the overall national electorate to 13 percent in the process.

That’s a tough act to follow for any Democrat, including Hillary Clinton, the party’s 2016 presidential front-runner and the early favorite to win its nomination.

While Obama may have expanded their voting power, and African Americans are, writ large, fiercely loyal Democrats, it’s unlikely that Clinton – Obama’s first-term secretary of state, wife of Bill Clinton, once considered the first black president, and close friend of Vernon Jordan, among the most influential black men in the nation – will get that kind of love.

The reasons vary, but the biggest one is the most obvious: Obama himself is not on the ballot.
