President Obama's trip to a federal prison in Oklahoma is part of the administration's efforts to reform the criminal justice system



On Thursday, President Obama will become the first sitting president to visit a federal prison.

Mr. Obama will travel to Oklahoma's El Reno Correctional Institution, home to Jason Hernandez – a prisoner convicted on drug charges who had his life sentence commuted by Obama in 2013, reports Vice News.

The trip, which will be recorded for a Vice documentary airing on HBO this fall, comes amidst the Obama administration’s broader efforts towards creating what it sees as a fairer US criminal justice system, mostly in response to tougher drug laws that disproportionately imprisoned minorities ...

Be careful for what you wish! I remember reading black-oriented news stories in the 1980s that criticized the criminal justice system for not caring about the drug problem in the inner cities. Many local black politicians called for tougher sentencing for drug offenders, getting tough on drug dealers who prey on defenseless people in the inner cities or apply their trade near schools, etc. Now we want to cry because we got what we asked for. Turned out not to be such a great idea, huh?

That as a Clinton led initiative for which he recently had to make profuse apology ...

But in the case of Bill Clinton’s apology for the war on drugs and mass incarceration, is it too much, too late?

President Bill Clinton admitted what few politicians ever do. He said he was wrong. He conceded that the policies of his administration played a role in today’s mass incarceration of America.

Clinton pursued this ill-advised course of action after listening to numerous people--including various black politicians and activists--who made the case for stricter prison sentences for drug offenders. There's enough blame to go around.
