Black People : Why It’s Time for America to Get Real About Reparations for Black Folks

New survey says most ( them ) don't even want to give an apology for slavery

.

Most folk on Destee.com are very familiar with the Congressman's effort that actually began back in 1989; I know I am.

Ta-Nehisi Coates and Deadria Farmer-Paellmann are new on the scene, and in addition to Conyers' on-going battle with Congress.

That's all well and good that he is trying to create a "national conversation" about it, but John Conyers actually proposed a bill (co-sponsored by John Lewis) that would create a "Commission" for the sole purposes of STUDYING reparations:

H.R. 40: Commission to Study Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act

Full Title

To acknowledge the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States and the 13 American colonies between 1619 and 1865 and to establish a commission to examine the institution of slavery, subsequently de jure and de facto racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans, and the impact of these forces on living African-Americans, to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies, and for other purposes.

Well, the purpose of the Thread is to gather positive response and feedback, but in the process, dead-beat opinions slip into the conversation; notwithstanding however, think optimistically about a favorable outcome.

Again, I can appreciate what "THEY" are doing, but what are any of "US" doing that would like to continue talking about it?

Plans, strategies, outlines, literature on how to create anything that would merit consideration.

Because in essence what it will boil down to is a solid case as well as a whole lot of "Gotcha!" before even this resolution that was brought forth decades ago, which now just seems to be a routine and not serious, will have any legs to stand on.

What is the proposal? Already offered three points of interest to begin with, not sure if they are responded to elsewhere or in this thread and we have overlooked them.

Carry on brother, you are building; hopefully, others will chime into the conversation.

How does "America" get real about reparations?

This is my question as I am still somewhat confused about who/what "America" refers to, and what "get real" eludes to.

Also, what constitutes "reparations"?

Define:
  1. America
  2. Get Real
  3. Reparations

Then after these are refined and clarified, I think the feedback can be more productive and "dead-beat" opinions will be seen as such.
