under the sun
I'd like to tell you
you were the wind
beneath my wings

but I learned to fly on my own

I'd like to tell you
you were the rock
I could always lean on

but erosion weathered
you long ago

I'd like to tell you
you're the one person
I could always count on

but you were never around

I'd like to thank you
for teaching me lifes'
lessons and values

but I was self-schooled

I'd like to thank you
for taking care of me
all through childhood

but I fended for myself

I'd like to tell you
that I appreciate
all you gave me

but my gift basket was empty

I'd like to thank you
for always putting me first
ahead of all others

but in truth I was non-existent

but I will tell you
I am thankful
you gave me life

at least you got that right
