WHO IS THE RED DRAGON OF REVELATIONS?

By Andre Austin

Many of the things said and done in the bible were done at the time they were written. Sometime this year Joseph Atwill will release a new book called The Single Strand. He plans on decoding the book of Revelations and other matters.

A Roman historian by the name of Suetonius wrote The Twelve Caesars documenting the lives of 12 Roman emperors. Its atwill theory that many of the incidents in the Book of Revelations can be matched up by reading Suetonius biography of Domitian. Atwill remarks that Domitian made a bed of suffering for a woman in Revelation and that he is the Red dragon that wants to kill a child before giving birth in Revelations. So let’s look at some brief bare facts from his biography on Domitian:

1. “Domitian had a ruddy (Red) complexion… and hammer toes, weak eyes (Bronze/bear feet?)”

2. Domitian was extremely lustful and called his constant sexual activities bed wrestling, as though it were a sport. Some say that he preferred to depilate (remove hair) from his concubines himself, and would go swimming with the commonest of prostitutes. He had been offered the hand of his brother’s daughter (Julia daughter of Titus), while she was still a young girl, but refused to marry her on account of his infatuation for Domitia…She became pregnant by him and died as the result of an abortion which he forced on her”. Why would a man hate woman with hair. Suetonius in his biography says “He took personal insult to any reference, joking or otherwise to bald men, sensitive about his own baldness and wrote a book called “Care of the Hair”. This explains why he had the authors of Revelations say he had hair of a lamb’s wool. If he would have said anything else he would have been executed.

Now does not this sounds like Domitian in Revelation Whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze…You tolerate that woman jezebel she misleads my servants to sexual immorality. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering. Unless she repents I will strike her children dead. (Revelation 2:18-22).

Other peculiar episodes of Domitian bed runs as follows. “Domitian was not merely cruel, but cunning and sudden into the bargain. He summoned a Palace steward to his bedroom, invited him on his couch…share dinner with him-yet had him crucified on the following day.

“So much lightning had fallen during the past eight month…even Domitian’s own bedroom were struck”. Domitian asked an astrologer to predict what it means. By magical arts revealed the future of Domitian death. Domitian was upset with the news and had the prophet half- burned and eaten by dogs for revealing the secret This runs consistent with a prophetess who was cast on a bed of suffering and warned others “not learned Satan’s so called deep secrets (Rev 2:20-25. Other punishments in Rev are very similar to Domitian. The whore or great prostitute being stripped naked “they (dogs?) will eat her flesh and burn her with fire” (Rev 17:16-17).

We now jump to Revelation 12 to hear about the Red dragon:

We now jump to Revelation 12 to hear about the Red dragon:

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[a] And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne”.

When joseph Atwill wrote Caesars Messiah he gave a little teaser at the end to talk about his second book. The 1st book was documenting that Jesus ministry in the 4 gospels were a parody of Titus military campaign. With his second book The Single Strand he documents that Titus brother and successor Domitian succeeds him as “like the son of man” in Revelations. He gives several important facts linking Suetonius biography of Domitian with Revelation:

A. Raised a day’s wages by a third and increased grain/decreased wine parallel Rev:6:6

B. Rode a white horse

C. Those who say they are Jews and Not trying to avoid Taxes

D. Had bronze feet

E. Archer

F. Was member of the trinity of Gods

G. Gave prophetess chance to repent then cast on bed of suffering.

TAXES IN ANCIENT ROME ON THE JEWS

By Andre Austin

Suetonius covering the roman rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian wrote his book The Twelve Caesars. I’m particular interested in his biographies of Vespasian, Titus, Nero and Domitian. Some pecular issues about taxes relating to bible passages are mysterious.

Suetonius writes on Domitian:

“Domitian’s agents collected the tax on the Jews, (imposed by Vespasian after he destroyed their temple in 70AD), with a peculiar lack of mercy; and took proceedings not only against those who kept their Jewish origins a secret in order to avoid the tax, but against those who lived as Jews without professing Judaism” (Domitian 12).

“Behold I will make them the synagogue of Satan , which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie. I will make them to come and worship before thy feet” (Rev 3:9). We also know the above rulers were fond of Jupiter in Rome or better known as Zeus in Greek and Amen in Egypt:

“The Amen (Jupiter/Zeus) the faithful and true witness, the beginning of creation” (Rev 3:14). I digress on a tangent but back to the subject at hand.

I’m confused by some of Flavius Josephus Bar Matthias statements in his Life. It appears that not all Jews were taxed by Domitian. Taxes were excluded from a city owned by Josephus tax free:

“He (Domitian), also made that country (city/village) I had in Judea tax free, which is a mark (tattoo) of the greatest honor to him who hath it” (Life 76:429) compare “He set up an image in his honor…receive a mark” (tax exempt mark) Rev 13:14-16

According to Robin Lane Fox’s book The Unauthorized Version:

“The number of the first beast (666) probably equates with the letters of the name of Nero, but the name might be symbolic…When he (John) emphasizes the mark of the beast on its worshipers forehead, he is echoing the practice of tattoing the hands and foreheads of pagan worshipers of particular gods…Exemptions from taxes did often benefit the crowds attending major pagan festivals” (p.349). So all of this hyperbole talk about the sinister 666/Nero was just a bunch of jive about taxes?

Suetonius records vicious lampoons of poetry posted on the walls in Rome:

“It was strange how amazingly tolerant Nero seemed to be of the insults that everyone cast at him, in the form of jokes and lampoons, here are a few example of verses:

Count the numerical values

Of the letters in Nero’s name

And in murdered his own mother

You will find their sum is the same” (Nero 39)

This whole language is similar to Rev 13:18 “Let him calculate the number of the beast, for its man’s number. His number is 666.”. According to Suetonius Nero was called a monster/beast (Titus 7)

The other poem reads

“Though Nero may pluck the chords of a lyre,

And the Parthian King the string of a bow

He who chants to the lyre with heavenly fire

Is Apollo as much as his far-darting foe (Nero 39)

Here again in Rev 13:13 associates this same beast 666/Nero with bringing down fire. “And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven”.

Then in Rev 14 the writers distinguished Satan mark on forehead with God’s mark on the forehead singing a song not with a lyre but with harps even though the lyre is in the harp family. And water comes down instead of fire as sound of water. Probably the “Living water”. Titus was considered a second Nero, sang pleasantly and was an excellent player of the harp. Jesus/Titus voice was the sound of water (Rev 1:15)

I don’t see how anyone can deny that the writer of John was aware of those lampoon poems against Nero.

Notes:

Matthew 11:19 records “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, behold a man gluttonous (greedy) and a winebibber, a friend of publicans (tax collectors) and sinners”.

This fits the description of Titus who Jesus would predict would destroy the Temple before the generation (40 years) of Jews died. If Jesus said this between 30-33 then we are talking about the Temple destruction by Titus in 70AD. Titus was friends with the Alexanders who collected Taxes for Rome. His family members like Titus Flavius Petro took up tax –collecting. And had a statue that read ‘To an honest tax-gatherer” (Vespasian 1). Plus Suetonius records that Titus had a reputation for greed and through extravagant, riotous parties and took other people wives and even eunuchs and homosexuals. Does this not fit Matthew 11:19?

According to Josephus writings Antiquities of the Jews Book 18: 1 (1-10) another war, revolt or rebellion of the Jews with the Romans started because Caesar sent Quirinius/Cyrenius (6AD) to Syria and Israel to take a tally of a fiscal census and register Jews for taxes. Luke’s Gospel does an acrobat flip on history and links the census with the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:1-4). Well the Jews consider this tax heinous and that taxation was no better than the introduction of slavery. The New Testament perspective say that Taxes and slavery are okay because the people doing it (Romans) were given dominion over the Jews and others. In the Gospel of Luke, the depiction of Mary and Joseph going to Bethlehem to register for the census is a satirical lampoon to counter this revolt. The Gospel of Luke portrays Jews who cooperate in paying taxes.

Cast of characters in Revelations

By Andre Austin

The five fallen kings in REV 17:10 excluding Nero are:

1. Nero (37-68) force to kill self to avoid execution public enemy style of being beat naked with an iron rod.

2. Galba 3BC-69AD assainated by the praetorian guard

3. Otho 32-69AD called Nero by the crowds & forced to stab himself

4. Vitelius 15-69AD dragged through streets of Rome then murdered

5. Vespasian 9-79AD possibly poisoned

6. Titus 39-81AD possibly poisoned (Son of Man in the 4 Gospels)

7. Domitian 59-96AD was supposed to be the 7th and 8th king because he was supposed to come back “Like a son of man” (Rev:14:14) and kill all the Jews and those that follow them.

A. 666 is supposed to be Nero bringing down fire from the sky while playing the violin or harp.

B. Jezebel (Rev 2:20) may be Julia the daughter of Titus

C. Rider of white horse is Domitian

D. The Red dragon is Domitian chasing the pregnant Julia to force an abortion

E. Two witnesses (two olive trees) may be Vespasian and Titus. The Greek word for martyr is witness and there were rumors that Domitian had both killed. The symbols of the Flavian dynasty of Vespassian, Titus and Domitian was an Olive branch, boat, anchor and a fish, the same as Christianity.
