The Mapouka is a West African dance, which is used as a means of deciding mates for the young men and women. The dance is conducted by nude women and is extremely provocative. However it serves a purpose (that of mate selection), and quite often the marriages formed from these unions last a lifetime. This dance has come under criticism by Western society for objectifying women. However after seeing a video of Mapouka I couldn't help but notice the similarities between this dance and "freakin". I wonder of this is another aspect of African culture that was carried over into our society, but lost its original meaning over time? Here is a link to more info about this beautiful dance:

It is very possible that this could have been over over to the States during times of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. I'm sure there are more variants of this dance in other African cultures as well. A lot of West African dances use the hips.
