Pan Africanism : Who has heard of the MAPOUKA?

    The Mapouka is a West African dance, which is used as a means of deciding mates for the young men and women. The dance is conducted by nude women and is extremely provocative. However it serves a purpose (that of mate selection), and quite often the marriages formed from these unions last a lifetime. This dance has come under criticism by Western society for objectifying women. However after seeing a video of Mapouka I couldn't help but notice the similarities between this dance and "freakin". I wonder of this is another aspect of African culture that was carried over into our society, but lost its original meaning over time? Here is a link to more info about this beautiful dance:

    You know I had to come check this thread out Brother Panafrica. I thought I didn't know what Mapouka was, but now that I've read about it, I do believe I've seen this dance on BET several times....lol
    anyway, this was very intersesting

    I know the mapouka dance but don't know that it has meaning. just thought that it is an obscene dance, nothing all.

    It is very possible that this could have been over over to the States during times of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. I'm sure there are more variants of this dance in other African cultures as well. A lot of West African dances use the hips.
