    He spoke in Whispers

    My father always whispered when he entered
    Never speaking above a calm as momma sang
    The blues all day and night about the things he
    Didn’t do to satisfy her needs and wishes;

    Poppa never spoke above a whisper when the
    World surrounded him with endless rivers of
    unreachable dreams and hopeless aspirations
    that he never desired but attempted to fulfill

    daddy never talked above a whisper when my
    momma would tell him he a no good man cuz
    he didn’t buy her things and spend the time she
    felt he needed to with his direction starved sons

    never saw daddy much except for when he
    would come home from work and put his bag
    at the door, pick up his dinner and head towards
    his bedroom slowly closing the door behind him;

    never looked for poppa much because I knew
    that when he came out his room I was in trouble
    and I didn’t want to know the result of such when
    he walked to me without a hint of happiness

    never searched for my father much for he was good
    at coming home on time and we always knew that
    when we heard the television that he was okay and
    once in a while he’d come out to go to the bathroom

    never needed my poppa much when I was little but
    when I got older and I became a father he gave me
    directions, showed me instructions and guided me
    with a few words, “No matter what, always be daddy.”

    My father never spoke much and rarely spent time
    With me but I know that the one who lived behind
    That door was the same one who loved me even
    When he spoke in a whisper…

    sorry for letting this one hang, d.

    there is much HEART in these words that we, as black families from the old days, can relate to. NO, poppa never spoke above a whisper in my house either...that is, 'til one of us was in trouble...and that's when you didn't want him to speak above a whisper.

    heartfelt.

    this is a masterpiece, my brutha! Pieces like this, about experiences with family members that ultimately serve to shape us as adults, always move me...always.

    Thank you for this.
