    i do not even know the basic rules...

    is there software or an online place that i can learn?

    Probably, but I would not recommend that. Pick up a cheap chess set, find others interested and begin to play...The very first thing you would need to know is how each piece moves. You need to get the feel of handling the pieces, how to set the board, etc...Find a friend that plays and ask questions or simply purchase a low-in beginner book.

    go down to where there are games going on and watch. How the pieces move
    is one thing.. how to play the game is another. Online there are a number of
    sites.. do a search.. I would also suggest a trip to the local used book store..
    Also, pick up a good quality set and clock.. make sure the board is big enough
    to get a clear idea of what is happening.
