    When I used to….
Put a quarter in the paper box and take out many
Sell them same papers downtown, tryin to make money for penny
Candy, and a smiling face came in handy
Many dollars they would hand me,
Trying to be a hustler at an early age
Taking a bow on the players stage.
    Harmless then, but troubled now
    to think how
    I used to…..be
I used to throw rocks at the feigns
    Snatch bags at Halloween.
    Played ball for the school,
Cause that was a the ghetto rule,
Either Ball…or thug, pick your poison
    Choose your drug.
    I chose the other…
    I used to…
Get around the corner and take off my rubber boots.
Got tired of the chuckles at the
Army buckles that made noise when I walked,
And my shadow stalked me with the sun that had no heat
Cause the hawk was anything but sweet, in the Mid west,
    Just south of the Chi,
Spent many Weekends as a teen.
Live as hell fine ladies, and the rides were clean.
Rolling through blinking yellow lights, me and my homey
Couldn’t wait to get to a spot on the block of 79th and Stony.
A little fuel was in my system but I was alert to the sounds
Quick to duck behind a door when I heard the gun shot rounds.
    When I used to…
Check my gear, make sure the colors matched my destination.
Had to know the rules of engagement
    In the ghetto nation
    When I used to …
Stand on the corner and play dozens till the street lights came on.
Bobbing my head when a car rode by playing my song.
Taking notice to the brothers slanging them boulders,
Then snapping out of my trance with a tap on my shoulder,
It was time to bounce to the place where I was protected…
My home, the place God selected.
And I have left but I am still where I used to be,
In my mind I have changed, but I remember..
    What I used to be….

    West side of town
    From Central and Washington
    to Polk and Kedzie
    remembering
    the open hydrants
    in summertime
    hanging on the bumpers
    of trucks
    as the roll through
    our cooling grounds
shooting ball at the neighborhood Y
    that doubled for
a getting your freak on session
    on a locker room
    taking the congress L
    downtown
    to the show
    McVickers
where you had to hold your feet off the floor
    cause something may bite you
watching the rats stroll across the movie screen
and don't forget the downtown popcorn shop
    Garrett's
    Carmel corn and cheese mix
    while chillin round buckingham fountain
    on columbus drive
    on the way back home
    stop off on Halsted
    and Roosevelt
    Jew Town
    was the destination
    Maxwell street
for a Jew town Polish with xtra mustard
kicking it back to the westside
    black and gold territory
chilling at the 2 flat until late night
    when the freaks come out
    gun shots in the distance
    but not on my block
    so we just sit there
    talking bout
how we going to make it off this block
    live downtown
    or the suburbs
    when we get older
    yeah that was our dream
    and I'm proud to say
    mine has come to pass
yet I stroll back every now and then
    things don't look the same
hypes and chicken heads on the corner
three times as many dealers as when I was living there
    burnt out buildings
ye I run across some old friends
some of those who never made it off the block
    we chat and chill
    some strung out
    some given up
and some just realize this is home
    and its fine
The Ghetto ain't nothing like it baby
    i'm a product of it
    and I ain't ashamed
because we learned how to survive
    on little or nothing
and we appreciated the little we got
    knew what struggle meant
hardships was a way of life
    but there was fun also
more fun than I ever had before
I miss some of those times
    but time moves on
    and so must I
But I will always cherish my memories
    of growing up
    on the westside of Chi
