    I.

Man-Shu Ko was only eleven years old when I asked her to put a crown on my head. It happened just before 4:00 p.m. ( I remember because that first win was a long time coming). I sat on my throne majestically, but Man-Shu Ko was still so beautiful.

    II.

She brought her slanted eyes to me all the way from Hong Kong.

I presented my thick lips from the West Indies and spoke to her between Geography lessons from across the aisle when Mrs. Alban wasn’t looking.

She was Asia and I was Africa and we passed notes and played checkers every day after school.

    III.

Man-Shu Ko was mysterious. Bobbed hair cuts, bell bottoms and sticky white rice in multi-coloured finger bowls steaming through the back door of her mother’s kitchen.

On the morning of the 6th grade picture day, Man-Shu wore her Chinese slippers.

    IV.

I convinced her to bring a dollar to school one day so we could both dine on beef patties and coco bread at noon. She was yellow teeth and excited fingers back then. That day she tried to bite and hold Jamaica.

    V.

That day when my mother beat me. Tropical blood trickled through my fingers. I called my 'Fu Man-Shu Ko' on the telephone. Asked her to leave the back door open and give me refuge in her eleven year old Temple.

I would learn the best cuss words in Chinese

Perhaps her mother would buy us bunk beds

I would wear silk robes and dip my nappy hair in Dark & Lovely , so I could look smooth and shiny like them.

I would change my name to 'Mei-Ling Ko' if they wanted me to and play Mah Jong and Chinese Checkers with them on multicultural Sunday afternoons

    I would…I would…I would…

If only the back door had been left open

everytime I read a piece like this I think you can't possibly write anything better, and then you do....

you have the enviable talent of mixing beauty and pain together to create works that simply "shine"...
