Now, I know some of this might sound silly, but just humor me for a moment. Suppose the American government, now in 2010, decided to literally give every black descendant of slaves in America 40 acres and a mule. 1) What would you do with the land? Would you keep the land and build a house on it? (Keep in mind, the gov't WILL require you to pay taxes on it.) Would you hold on to it and pass it down to your kids? Would you try to sell it? And if so, what what would you do with the money? Would you consider planting a garden on it and selling the food to grocery stores and farmers markets? What about combining your land with other black people's land and building a community? AND 2) What would you do with the mule? Now, keep in mind that there really isn't a market for mules in this day and age, so selling it may not be so easy. Where would you keep it? What would you feed it? Would you abandon it in the woods somewhere? Keep it as a pet? I know this type of payout would have been extremely valuable back in the day, but how would you use your creativity to generate economic value from the same payout in this day and age (especially with the mule)?
