Do you think there are any differences between continental African people and Africans born in US (African Americans), in terms of culture, ethnicity or anything else - that makes African Americans a bonafide group or ethnicity that although has origins in Africa but may exhibit enough uniqueness to view differently?

Do you believe the term African American properly and adequately describe who we are as a people?

Do you think African Americans, aside from the collective social and economic oppression that binds us, are a uniform group culturally? Are there any legimate variations among African Americans in terms of identity and culture?

These questions are not meant to serve as divisive instruments but to gain a deeper introspection into what it means to be Black in the United States.

We are woefully different from people on the mother continent. We share a lot of the same customs and values but we express them differently. For example, Africans and African-Americans both consume large amounts of yams. However, there is a significant difference between the pounded yam of Africans and the candied yams of African-Americans.

African-Americans absolutely are not monolithic. We have various regional cultural differences that show our diversity. For example, GA and SC are known to be the home of a very distinct group of African-Americans called Gullah Geechee. Though they eat much of the same food as most Southern African-Americans, their language sets them apart. Another unique group that is vastly different from most African-Americans is the Louisana Creole people. They also have their own language. A smaller but steadily growing group, though they remain nameless, are African-Americans who have reverted back to African Traditional Religions.
