When you hear the word "SCRIPTURES", what does that mean to you? Does it automatically mean the Bible?

For me, based the term's definition:

    scrip·ture [ skrípchər ] (plural scrip·tures) or Scrip·ture [ skrípchər ] (plural Scrip·tures)

    noun

sacred writing: any sacred writing or book
    "Buddhist scripture"

It would mean any host of Spiritual, religious and/or philosophical writings.

    Add-On with your thoughts.

    PEACE

I agree, but in American culture it's difficult to get away from subconsciously linking Scripture with the Bible.

    Power & Equality God!!

I humbly submit that only one who has not ventured outside of the bible with an open mind will hear the word scripture and think of the bible only.

Yet, if this ? is looked at with an open "eye", we will have solved 90% of the problem, or as brother James asked in another thread "why fight"......because the respect level would rise considerably......

I dare say MOST of the fighting is caused because most of us only accept "OUR" so-called Holy books as "Scripture" & everything else as ungodly...........or Un-scriptoral!! (if that's even a word)

    Peace

    Scriptures means "scripts" or writtings.

Writting is a divine gift and God gave us scriptures to keep us on the right path.

I agree with Ralfa'il and EVE.

A script on life, or a guidance to direct one on their spiritual journey.

[Script, perhaps can be an anogram for Secret, as Cript, or Crypt, means "Hidden", a Hidden Scroll, or Map, to Spritual Ascension, into the Heavens, and Universe (the Inner and Outer Mind.), are the Scriptures.]

1Cr 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, [even] the hidden [wisdom], which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Isa 45:3 And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call [thee] by thy name, [am] the God of Israel.

    PEACE LORD:

    I agree with this.

Those who have only read the Bible, are those who see "Scripture" and "Bible" as being exclusively synonymous.

You have the Qur'an, Pert Em Heru, Tibetan Book Of The Dead, I-Ching, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Native American Petroglyphs, etc, that are indeed Scriptural, and of no less importance than that of the Bible.

Not even the Bible is a complete document, as we know that the Council of Nicea subtracted books from it. Then there's the Apocrypha, etc.

The search for the Divine is a never-ending one.

    PEACE

It means the Bible among other Holy text that was not placed in the Bible but was definitely apart of what the Isrealites kept sacred.

Only that which speaks of the Father and the Holy Son's salvation by the blood of His sacrifice, written of the Holy prophet and saints, is scripture to me. All else is false Doctrine.
