call a kid "empty?" Pronounced EM-ty? I've never heard an adult called EM-ty, only kids as in:

Son and daughter fighting. Mom tells son not to hit his sister.

Son: She hit me first! Don't nobody hit me and I don't hit them back!

Moms: Boy! Shut up and sit yo' EM-ty butt down!

What the heck does EM-ty mean??? It was directed at me a couple times and even though I always wondered  I never had the courage to flat-out ask!

Means dunce, empty headed, lacking good judgement, you aren't getting it in other words.

In the context in that situation, striking back would only cause the other to retaliate, and so the fighting and carrying on goes round and round.

One saying that older folks would use that would have me puzzled is them saying
' shut my mouth, wide open!'

    Or
'just down the road a piece'

    Dang...
This has me missing my Uncle Jack right now. (PBUH)

Josef ... i have heard ... "just down the road a piece" ... ... that means just down the road a piece ...

My Momma useta tell us to "pick up the floor" ... "pick up the living room" ... and we'd be laff'n at her amongst ourselves, talk'n 'bout ... can't nobody pick up no floor! ... we'd be talk'n all big and bad ... like we shouldn't do nuth'n ... cause what she told us to do ... can't be done ... we should just not do it, then when she comes fuss'n explain to her that it could not be done ... but we never did that ... never said a word to her about it ... just went on and picked up those things as we talked ...

For the record ... "pick up the floor" ... "pick up the living room" ... etc ... meant clean 'em up! :clean1:

    Great Thread! :toast1:

    Peace

It's the same as when they say 'boy, put something in your head (because it's em-ty) and not on it'.

EM-ty = not thinking, not listening, not doing what you're supposed to do, useless or no good.

Trust me, i think i was EM-ty several times as a yourth. As a matter of fact you could have called me an EM-ty offender.
