i see a number of people swear by strict monogamy. i guess that is a good thing.

i wonder about the roots of the concept. is it african based or european based?
when, where and how did we decide that monogamy was the only way for black people?

i am genuinely ignorant so maybe somebody can educate me?

The concept of Monogamy is historically rooted in Christianity, according to virtually all the studies I have done. Furthermore, it is typically related to the practice of marriage.

This is just an abstract of a study relative to mongamy and polygyny.

Since the arrival of European missionaries in Africa, there has been charged debate over people's marriage choices. This article outlines the major elements in the academic, theological, and popular discourses on marriage in Africa, focusing on two topics: the conceptual divide between monogamous Christian marriage and African polygyny, and the claim that women automatically prefer monogamy. By comparing the assumptions in the literature with ethnographic data from the Republic of Benin, this article demonstrates that marital choices cannot necessarily be predicted by a person's gender and rarely are characterized by a definitive conceptual divide. Instead, personal motives related to economics, prestige, and competition for power are the main factors in marriage choices.

The following is a scientific study.

Modern Man Found to Be Generally Monogamous, Moderately Polygamous

The authors of this study estimate that the breeding ratio varies between 1.1 and 1.4 according to population: 1.1 in Asia, 1.3 in Europe and 1.4 in Africa.

Modern man or Homo sapiens would, therefore, usually have been monogamous while exhibiting tendencies toward polygamy over the course of evolutionary history. These findings are consistent with studies in evolutionary psychology and anthropology that depict contemporary human populations.

With a comparative breeding rate of 1.1 in Asia, it is Asiatics, not europeans who have exhibited the greatest tendency towards monogamy. However, there are Asiatic societies which also have the highest incidences of Polyandry, but they are mostly remote societies.

If you are looking at monogamy as an idea this is rooted in Christianity. In terms of the practice of monogamy, while you are "not much interested in asians" scientific studies indicate Asians were mostly monogamous but this dynamic changed over time as human migration replaced the indigenous populations in South Asia specifically.

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/11/051107080321.htm

The expansion of modern humans into South Asia appears to be part of a complex--at times fatal--story. Once modern humans (Homo sapiens) arrived in regions like India, the researchers argue that they would have met indigenous archaic hominids (such as Homo heidelbergensis). "While the precise explanations for the demise of the archaic populations is not yet obvious, it is abundantly clear that they were driven to extinction, likely owing to competition with modern humans over the long term," Petraglia said.

Perhaps, it is best to reference Samaritanism, which is related to Christianity
In the book of Leviticus it is stated that, "You shall not marry a woman over another to be a rival to her to uncover her nakedness as long as she is alive." In the Masoretic text, the same verse is interpreted to mean two sisters from the same parents, not any woman.

i think this is a concept that may not be black at it's roots but most black women of today uphold it fiercely.

"Ethnically, the Samaritans would seem to be descendants of the Joseph Tribes plus Levitical, Zadokite and, perhaps, other Israelite priestly elements"

If the Samitans were "Black Israelites", and monogamy began with this group, then monogamy began with Black people. But monogamy is not biblical. The Samaritans and Jews clearly split on this issue.

polygamy and monogamy have to do with wealth regadless of Black or white.

Wealthy whites are secretly polygamous,, (bigamists to the max)
and traditional African culture predicates polygamy on the basis that a man must be able to completly and effectively take care of the needs of one wife before he can have another.

Now in the PJs of most urban areas we see brothers that never had a job and don't want one but got 3 plus 6 baby mommas.

In the Nation of Gods and Earths , the old gods chide the new babies, not to study the lessons just to get alot of earths revolving around their sun, but to seek Knowledge Wisdom and Understanding.

There has also been a Brooklyn urban legend that many had leeft the NOI a few years after Malcolm's assasination to become orthodox Sunni and Shiite(they die their beards red or orange(don't ask why) just to become polygamous,
and then secretly puffin weed, drinking Rheingold and eatin headcheese!

I will not dispute what you say concerning today, but Elder brother James' question specifically asked concerning the ROOTS of monogamy.
