This year for the summer my daughter will be playing the piano.

I think one fundamental children should learn is how to play a musical instrument of some sort. Being that they are taking music programs out of schools, due to "recent budget cuts".

Also, I'm going to start teaching her another language.

IMO, children should be taught to speak other languages other than their own...I believe it builds their confidence in communicating.

What are some other fundamentals kids should be taught that may not be taught in schools? And why?

More physical activity than Wii, please!

I'll add physical ed for primary school and track in HS...there's much to be gained such as health, endurance, setting goals, team spirit...

here are some things.. in the order that they occurred to me:

How to cooperate. When to cooperate. When not to cooperate.

What teamwork is. What teamwork is not.

How to say what you mean. How to mean what you say.

How to lead. How to follow. When to lead. When to follow.

The difference between knowledge and wisdom.

What love is / what love is not.

There's no such thing as talent. There's only where you are and where you want to be.
And the action you take will either open or close the distance between those two points.

God is not a white man.

What friendship is / what friendship is not.

    How to work hard.

    The value of money.

    Delaying of gratification.

    creative writing. creative thinking.

What Art is. What Art is not.

    Art making, appreciation, interpretation.

Art as creative self-expression. Art as political-expression.

What excellence is and How to pursue it.

    Propaganda Techniques.

Film studies. Film techniques. How to make films.

    How language works.

How the human body works (including reproduction).

    Mathematics.

How to make money. how to recognize and exploit economic opportunities. start with something
small like retail sales of candy or ice-cream at a local park. buy wholesale, mark up the
    price and sell sell sell.

Carpentry. How to build a bookshelf.

    The basics of residential plumbing.

    Mechanics.

How cars work. How the internal combustion engine works.

    How the international government works.

    Human nature.

What sex is. What sex is for. What sex means.

    And...

a few years ago I dedicated an entire summer to reading. 30 minutes of reading
3 times per day. 2 trips per week to various libraries around the city. All on
public transportation.. the bus and the train.. so I was able to also show my
sons how to use public transportation.. how to exist out there in the public
world. It was a wonderful time. We met so many people out there on the bus,
at the bustop. Nice people.. nice conversations. We even witnessed a seizure
on one of the busrides.. luckily their was a nurse on he bus that took care of
the man while my sons an I flagged down a passing fire truck.

The result of all of that was a dramatic jump in reading scores on the next
years state tests. My oldest son read Moby Dick at 9 years old. We had a
conversation after each reading session so it's a job for the adult and the kid.
And the key to the whole thing is picking the right books. It has to be good
writing otherwise the kid can get turned completely off from reading. We read
a bunch of Jack London, Roald Dalhl, E.B. White, All of the Harry Potter series,
Series Of Unfortunate Events series, and some classics.. Dostoevsky's Notes
    From The Underground
, Hemingway's Old Man And The Sea, James Baldwin's
Sonny's Blues and also If Beale Street Could Talk.. A Briefer History Of Time
by Stephen Hawking.. Africans In America (book and video series)..
Haley's Roots and a bunch of other things.. it seems like a lot and it is but it didn't
feel like alot because the reading sessions we're broken up into 3 sessions per
day and the whole interaction had a sense of importance attached to it
because the entire family life was configured around it. They weren't told
to go read while I watched TV.. everyone was working on something.. I read
too.. and we also used audio.. and.. last thing.. I read to them each night
before they went to sleep.. it became a family tradition.. I walked in with a
stack of books from my shelf and sometimes some of my own writing and
I read until they were both asleep.

Needless to say, my kids are great readers and they are not intimidated by
long books.. and that came about in a single summer but it required the
    commitment of an entire family.

Fundamental things kids should be taught....hmmm there are alot of things I'm trying to teach my kids.

Respect your elders, think about consequences of your actions, being considerate of others are some of the main things. My daughters play musical instruments so that is covered too. So many kids aren't being taught these things and it really shows.
