(I had told someone that i would not write a poem about the tragedy for there were so many already but this was burning in my heart so forgive me for going agianst my own words.) Were you there? Were you there when the lives spoke of pain as they danced into the heavens on wings of terror? Were you there to see the falling bodies before you heard their terrible screams? Were you there to see our life, as we know it stolen by few whose purpose was to instill fear in the most fearless country to ever be formed? Were you there? Were you there to watch the innocent become unwanted martyrs in a land of the free and brave who masterminded the eradication of the same virus that Infiltrated our defenses when we let our guard down? Were you there to see how reality TV has desensitized a nation to the point that the ones who supposed to proclaim the news profess the sad, horrible truth that “Hollywood would have made it look more realistic.” Well how realistic could it be to see a plane fly into a building and to realize that the people on board never had a chance? To know that above the flames are thousands more whose exit has been eliminated by corrupt attempts to terrorize our lives and their only hope of survival is to jump 100 stories into the wings of angels waiting below? WERE…YOU…THERE? Were you there to watch the world as it crumbled before our eyes wondering what we’ve done to receive such hatred only to turn around and reach out to those who look like terrorist, walk like terrorist, born of the same country as terrorist, could be classified as terrorist and yet the real terrorist, (the ones who Bush proclaimed to hide in the dark) could be sitting next to you at work Making threats to any business with an ARAB looking name; Were you there? Were you there to see a country unite not to hate but to find ways To reach out to the many who arrived during the first alarm only to Lose their lives as they risk their lives to save the lives of those whose sole purpose that morning was to get through another week of work; Tell me, were you there? Well I was there and not in New York City for when I opened my eyes I see the fear in the faces of those who walk by, drive by, skate by, smile by, cry by and all The while I look to the sky and wonder when the next plane I see might carry the next attempt to prove who the real terrorists are in this world… This country has finally embraced love for one another as we work to rebuild the city But here’s a question to those in the struggle to build peace… Where Were You?
