Detroit duo markets pop culture philosophy to build college fund.

October 22, 2005 -- For the third week in a row, the Million Quarter Webpage (www.millionquarterwebpage.com) made Alexa’s Movers and Shakers list, a remarkable feat for a small, homegrown business run by two average Joes from the suburbs of Detroit.

MillionQuarterWebpage.com (MQW) literally sells pixels for -- you guessed it -- a quarter apiece. The pixels are bought in blocks of 100 by advertisers who use them to create virtual billboards on a million-pixel grid. The pixel page will live online for at least 10 years, and an advertiser’s quarter buys a pixel for the duration.
If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is.

“We freely admit we didn’t invent pixel advertising. It’s a craze, and we’re cashing in on it to seed our kids’ college funds,” said Jeremy Mlynarek, co-founder of MQW. “It’s taken off to a level we didn’t expect.”

Mlynarek attributes the success of MQW to creative, grassroots marketing, but his partner, Joshua Moser, is more philosophical.
“MQW has real artistic value, and I think people recognize that. MQW is pop art for the mass media age. When Andy Warhol took the image of a soup can and put it in a gallery, he made us notice the mundane.

Internet advertising is today’s soup can. It’s everywhere, on nearly every webpage we visit, and yet we’ve become blind to it. So MQW shifts it into a new configuration, a mosaic of sorts. The focal point of the MQW mosaic is those things we never see.”

Moser believes so deeply in the art of MQW that he plans to make lithographs of the grid when the webpage fills.

“MQW advertisers get more than just pixels for their quarters. They get a piece of Internet real estate, and they become part of a pop culture icon as well,” Moser said. Philosophy aside, advertisers on MQW are achieving a global audience as the webpage gains popularity and media accolades.

Is it the advertising -- or the attitude -- that is propelling the Million Quarter Webpage to achieve such success? The jury is still out, and most likely it’s a combination of both. MQW was recently featured on Buzz Factor, a nationally syndicated radio show, and these two small-town guys are enjoying the worldwide fame that comes from being one of Alexa’s Movers and Shakers.

The Movers and Shakers list includes the top 10 websites with the most dramatic increases in traffic rankings over the previous seven days. Debuting at the bottom of the list on October 5, MQW scraped its way up the rungs to number one. Alexa.com, owned by Amazon, ranks the top five million websites worldwide based on traffic and popularity.

I posted the thread because I found it inspiring.

They didnt reinvent the wheel here. They used an existing concept. To my knowledge the first site like this is MillionDollarHomePage.com .. currently showing $470,000 in revenue.

Two guys decided to build one similar. MillionQuarterWebpage.com generated publicity. Currently they are still number #3 on alexa movers and shakers. The results over $13,000 in 25days on a shoestring budget.

This is very inspiring for the webmasters here, (though I am not ready to experiment with selling ad space on my websites at least not yet).
