Brother Shikamaru ... what does a virtualization application do? What purpose does it serve?

    Thanks for sharing!

Virtualization allows you to stand up virtual machines to run operating systems upon.
    Hardware is emulated using software.

    To give an example:

Back in the day I had 13 computers.
I can now run 13 computers on one box using virtualization running an assortment of operating systems.

I use virtualization for creating enclosed programming environments, testing and experimentation, security scenarios, virtual networks, education, etc. ....

... anything and everything that can be done with physical computers.

I typically use it to run Windows and Linux on the same machine simultaneously, many times with the GUI desktops overlapping.

Amen! No more hot rooms for me, running box fans and cups of ice j/k. VM's are the way to go. Besides, you can download virtual machine with pre-built OS's (MAC OSX Lion'o, thundercat, whatever), without the hastle of keys, etc..

    Virtual Box ROCKS!

I'm getting pretty heavy into Citrix XenServer.

Been moving away from type II hypervisors to be honest.

I'm more of a build from absolute scratch kind of guy. Not a fan of pre-built images.

    Have you tried Oracle VirtualBox?

I have extreme prejudice against Virtual PC :).
