Utopia; the nightmare we aspire to
We dream of it
and hope for it.
They speak of it,
from pulpit
and from podium
and they make us aspire to it.
Great men have philosophized about it
and their philosophy is passed and studied
from age to age,
the interpretation never the same,
but the ideal is unchanged
Plato, Marx, Garvey, Césaire, King, Hitler, Gandhi, Machiavelli.
In some way one ideal,
all different interpretations of it,
all with different means to achieve it
and all different views of it.
But what is “it”?
“It” is an ideal of excellence,
“It” is perfection,
No,
“It” is perfection’s living form,
“It” is, what is Perfection.
It is Utopia.
The place where people are not black, white, yellow or brown,
but just people.
The place where universal unity is not a hippie’s dream
or human rights speech
but is something not even thought of,
just done,
like breathing.
It is that place where there is no rich or poor
Just happy people
Existing complimentary to each other,
Like day to night.
no governed nor government
no ruled nor ruler
no defendant or plaintiff
no judge
no jury.
These are not needed,
What for?
This is paradise,
this is perfection,
Utopia.
But this is only one opinion of Utopia
and this is the problem
and because of this problem
“it” can not exist.
Our human nature,
longs for it,
as much as it would not let it be.
Garvey’s Utopia was not Hitler’s Utopia.
Garvey’s Utopia was not even Dr. King’s Utopia.
For my Utopia is not yours;
the Utopia of one person
is the living hell of another.
Do you see the troubles of perfection?
Have you seen the chaos, pain and suffering left in the wake of those marching to Utopia?
Have you heard the cries and pleas or the valiant but vain chants of the pursuers of perfection?
These are the troubles of perfection.
I have seen and heard
and you have too,
just look around you,
we are living in the troubles of perfection.
The pursuit of Utopia,
this ideal of excellence,
the chase. . .
is painful and cruel
it is inhumane.
But we can not abandon the ideal.
What would we live for?
All we do,
all we work for,
all we believe
is an attempt to be the best
and the best is perfect
and Utopia is perfect.
A vicious circle?
A cruel destiny?
We all strive for perfection
but each with different perfections
this causes conflict and pain
but we still strive for perfection;
it is human nature.
A vicious circle
and a vicious torment,
our nature seeks our best
but drags us through the worst
and we are powerless.
Utopia; the prize of struggle
the ideal un-realized
the nightmare we aspire to.
We dream of it
and hope for it.
