With more than 38 million Americans too poor to buy adequate food, the US Congress has begun to take away the food stamps many of them receive.

The Republican majority on the House Agriculture Committee has approved budget cuts that will take "food stamps" away from an estimated 300,000 people and could cut off school lunches and breakfasts for 40,000 children.

The action came as the US Government reported that the number of people who are hungry because they can't afford to buy enough food rose to 38.2 million in 2004, an increase of seven million in five years.

The number represents nearly 12 per cent of US households.

Food stamps are coupons distributed to low-income people and redeemable at grocery stories for food.

The cuts, approved by the Republican-controlled committee on a party-line vote, are part of an effort by Republicans to curb federal spending by $US50 billion ($65.7 billion).

The food and agriculture cuts would reduce spending by $US3.7 billion, including $US844 million on nutrition, $US760 million on conservation and $US212 million on payments to US farmers.

The $US574 million reduction in food stamp spending is estimated to shut up to 300,000 people out of the program.

The restriction also could take free meals away from an estimated 40,000 school children, because children in many states are automatically eligible for school meals when they get food stamps, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The White House proposed the restriction earlier this year.

The bill would also raise the waiting period for food stamps for legal immigrants from five to seven years.

Senate Republican leaders are seeking to curb spending by $US39 billion, and have been more reluctant to cut government benefit programs.

The committee voted to shave $US212 million from direct payments to farmers, a one per cent reduction over the next four years. Cuts to commodity programs totaled $US1 billion and include repeal of a federal cotton subsidy to comply with a World Trade Organization ruling against the program.

and they want to know why the victims of katrina rob the stores blind. they had or else starve who in the hell is going to stand by and let their children die. oh lord what a web there weaving now were all going to suffer now. more and more disease will be on the rise and now more stealing and killing will be on the rise. now because the republican feel they are doing america some good by cutting welfare alltoghether. this is like what you said the devil working overtime. but we must never lose faith or hope. as free people and us citizen are we just going to stand by and let our people die. man has took upon themselves to wipe out the poor and inflate the rich. ok everybody be ready to watch your every move because people would do whatever necessary to feed their families. its a shame that those people in the white house or whoever approve this cut will and has started a war on our land. the land of the free and prosperity. i think that need to be omitted. we cant help that min. wage hasnt moved since the freedom train came aboard. and they want us to get by any means necessary. we must fight i tell you we cant just stand by and watch our love ones who are less fortunate than us DIE. if we have to flood them with letters something to get their attention. send positive proof that america doesn't care tape the homeless, tape the blind sick , tape our elderly scraping by they dont have the monies for medical supply. i'm angry and i'm mad as hell because man don't see the wars that are forth coming.

Hmm! It never occured to them that they could meet their entire goal by cutting down on military spending as well as the hotel costs for their conventions and "business" traveling. Still the pastors advise us to ignore the man behind the curtain and just help the poor.

Nevar--the black katrina victims were called looters; the white katrina victims were called finders. What a play on words. AS a matter of fact the trick of confusion is in the words, or so says the expert "Dr. Neely Fuller."

GOD will win in the end...!

Off Topic--But, did you notice how the word "refugee" ended when we started to protest the use of that off beat description created by the media--one of the major players in the arena of people activity."

Poetic Manifesta--voting is kewl; however---

Black Labor, White Wealth--Claud Anderson, Ed.D, page 34
"...Voting rights have pacified blacks by allowing them to make choices, but never decisions...
"...blacks may cast the decisive votes that put a candidate into office, but they cannot make that new office holder deliver..."
"

river--cutting down of military spending interrupts the coffers of Hallibuton, and you know Cheney can't have that!

The pastor performs the will of the "beast" because if he doesn't the church's tax exempt priviledges are revoked! I am afraid this is poor advice, because it weakens the Black infrastructure. Besides church and state are not supposed mix, anyways. This is part of the major problem now!
