Why didn't Texas Ebola patient receive experimental drug sooner?

As the global community scrambles to contain the virus, and as the cases outside Africa grow, questions have been raised about why Mr. Duncan, a Liberian war survivor who came to the United States to marry his son’s mother, hasn’t received the same experimental drug that doctors say may have played a role in the recovery of two American medical workers, Dr. Kent Brantly and aid worker Nancy Writebol.

Dr. Frieden has also said that doctors have balked at giving Duncan experimental drugs because side effects may present a mortal threat. The fact that he’s now receiving an experimental drug suggests that his situation has gotten worse to the point where the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. health officials said on Tuesday they would unveil within days new screening procedures for the deadly Ebola virus at the country’s airports to address public concern over the possibility of an outbreak.

“We’re working very intensively on the screening process both in the places of origin and upon arrival,” Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters. "We will absolutely look at every step that could tighten that process."

"The patient claims to have had contact with the Dallas 'patient zero,'" according to a statement from Dana Baird-Hanks, a spokeswoman with the city of Frisco.

Baird-Hanks says crews are at the scene "examining clinical staff and facility patrons."

Frisco transports patient with Ebola symptoms

FRISCO — A patient exhibiting "signs and symptoms of Ebola" has been transported from a Frisco CareNow, but a federal official said the person doesn’t have definite symptoms or definite contact with an Ebola patient.

Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he expected to know more later Wednesday evening. An Ebola patient in Dallas, the only one to be diagnosed on U.S. soil, died Thursday morning. The CareNow is in the 300 block of Main Street.

Texas Man Under Observation After Potential Ebola Exposure

Sgt. Michael Monnig, an employee of the Dallas County Sheriff's Office, was taken to the hospital Wednesday amid fears that he had been exposed to the Ebola virus, the sheriff's office confirmed. Authorities later announced that Monnig was at "minimal" risk, but said they were proceeding "with an abundance of caution."

Monnig had been in the apartment Thomas Eric Duncan was staying in before he was hospitalized and diagnosed with Ebola, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reported. Duncan, the first patient to be diagnosed with the virus in the U.S., died Wednesday morning.
