The question which now remains is, will his wife be expected to pay for his transfer costs? Are they so extremely sorry that his debt will be forgiven?

Doctor with Ebola dies at Nebraska hospital

Washington (AFP) - A doctor from Sierra Leone who was being treated at a US hospital for Ebola has died, the Nebraska Medical Center said Monday.

"We are extremely sorry to announce that the third patient we've cared for with the Ebola virus, Dr. Martin Salia, has passed away as a result of the advanced symptoms of the disease," said the hospital in a statement.

Hospitals improvise Ebola defenses, at a cost

In Newark, New Jersey, a hospital dealing with a space-crunch and staff anxiety moved its Ebola operation out of its main building and into a mobile medical shelter ordinarily used during natural disasters. In Dallas, Texas, three hospital systems pooled resources to create a treatment center in a defunct intensive care unit sitting empty since the spring. In Kansas, a hospital hastily built walls and hung plastic sheeting to create an isolation suite. A New York City hospital put together one unit, decided it wasn't optimal, and is finishing work on a replacement.

Federal officials have said they're trying to identify up to 20 hospitals around the country as Ebola referral centers. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention inspection teams have visited nearly 30 hospitals to offer advice and see if they have the right safeguards in place to treat patients with Ebola.

Ebola Nurse Amber Vinson Gets Free Engagement Ring

The Dallas nurse who flew to Ohio to plan her wedding in the days before she was diagnosed with Ebola and then said her engagement ring was destroyed when her apartment was decontaminated now has a new ring.

Amber Vinson and her fiancé, Derrick Markray, visited a Zales Jewelers jewelry store in Dallas Tuesday where they were able to pick out a new ring free of charge.

Another serious issue with dealing with Ebola is going to be all the nutty conspiracy theories, anti-vaxxer theories, and misinformation out there about the disease and the epidemiology of this kind of outbreak are going to be some tough hurdles to deal with, especially with how serious a public health and safety issue this has become in West Africa. The Internet is a wonderful breeding ground for this kind of crap, but hopefully it gets tackled and debunked early. Seriously addressing this stuff could translate into lives saved.

The Ebola virus, experts say, is classic conspiracy theory fodder: a silent killer that penetrates the body undetected and lies dormant for weeks. Its sources are obscure, its symptoms horrific.

“Diseases in particular are suited to conspiracy because they are invisible and invisibly transmitted,” Professor Barkun said. “Our senses can’t tell us exactly how the danger spreads. The theory has an answer for what mystifies and frightens.”
