It all started when I was 4,
that day momma left and couldn't take no more,
Me, my two bro's all confused and in the thro's,
'cause daddy hit momma, though not the first time,
he act like it wadn't no crime,
standin' there in my pink nightgown,
couldn't even look at me in my big brown eyes,
'cause to do that, he'd have to see she,
and as I look back, I can only think, "would he have hitten me?"

It's been 17 years now, havn't seen daddy,
don't know what he look like,
wouldn't know 'em if he was still drivin his caddy,
See, daddy was not quite a rollin stone,
he never abandoned us or anything, nor left us 'lone,
I know y'all heard a similar story or two, maybe even been there,
if so, then you know what I'm goin through,
    Which brings me to...

    Granny...granny...granny... called momma a prostitute, a whore,
said that I'd be one too,
Now why would granny say such a thing like that,
I thought grannies are 'sposed to love and be compassionate,
Said I'd never be nothin, 'cause I'm my momma's girl,
too dark, though got them Indian bones, and long hair, she ain't got nothing else goin for her,
She dyslexic, got her daddy's blood, so you know she gon' be slow.

Saw granny a few weeks ago,
she doin well, though a little frail, she talkin 'bout going "up to yonder",
she told me how much she missed me, when she said she loved me, I couldn't help but wonder,
Tell'in me that she needed help, guidance and some money, now that she found out that I'm a lawyer...

'Aint it funny how things get turned 'round,
here you are from a broken home,
    on the ground,
    from family gettin' frowned upon,
daddy proved statistics right one more time,
and you know that insanity passes from father to daughter,
I 'sposed to had lost my mind, everything good that happened,
'aint come from me, let me get that straight now, cause He strengthened me,
my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ had mercy on me,

Now it all started when I was 4,
since then I've learned how to be strong,
how not to depend on this cruel and evil world,
being black and a female in a society so void,
coming from roots where only poverty seemed to prevail,
finally I can stand tall and say, I've proved a statistic wrong,
y'all bare with me for a lil' while, 21 and my work 'aint done,
y'all bare with me for a lil' while, I 'aint whinin' nor complainin,
I'm just gonna be honest, I'm tryna stay strong, nobody said it'd be easy,
still a babe, barely finished puberty,
So can't get lazy now, come too far,
besta' like it 'cause the journey has just begun...

This piece surprised me, I thought at one point you were going to talk more about the father, and then the piece turned to granny. Yes, we do expect a grandmother's love, but it seems like strength and determination won out. Welcome to Destee, hope to read more from you.

Looks like we're getting our wires all crossed Nubi. By surprised, I didn't really mean confused, and I wasn't disappointed. My being surprised in this case wasn't a negative thing, just unexpected. And when I read something that is unexpected, it only makes me want to delve into it all the more. Hope that explaination clears this up.
So, let me welcome you again. And that avatar? It came with a group of sample pictures as part of Windows XP.
