through the years
and through the tears
through the crying out for attention
you finally saw me

and with one hand you gave
and with the other hand you took
and with one hand i gave
and with the other hand i took

finally on a level playing field
given a second chance by god
who must want to see us together
he must want black families to thrive

but best of all
it's good to know
we're no longer living a lie
being together

loving one another
smiling and laughing
that time together is pure
are you my husband? sure

but what makes a marriage is so much more
from time to time there will be closed doors
and from time to time some will be open
but weathering these times
that's what makes a marriage

when you can write up years
and you can wipe away fears
and you can know that in the end
you stand together

that's what it's all about
know this
that we are one
that before god we are together
and before god we will never part
